ARCHITECTURE

ARCHITECTURE

Located in the heart of Kakheti, Georgia, the Shilda Winery is quite literally embedded within the landscape of the vineyards, making it barely noticeable from a birds eye view.  At the core of the vineyard, the building forms a stream of curved beams that host several activities: wine tasting, wine storing, and wine knowledge sharing. This design is a considered response to the region’s environmental factors, utilizing the thermal mass of the soil to maintain stable internal temperatures while orienting the primary glazed facades toward the north to avoid direct solar gain. By minimizing energy waste and blending into its agricultural context, the winery acts as a functional extension of the ecosystem.

CONCEPT

The concept for the Shilda Winery is centered on the idea of architectural integration, where the building acts as a literal extension of the earth rather than a separate structure. By following the precise grid of the vineyard, the design mimics the rhythm of the planting rows, allowing the architecture to disappear into the landscape of Kakheti. This “invisible” approach is deeply rooted in the environmental needs of winemaking, using the heavy soil to naturally regulate temperatures and protect the wine as it ages.

FACADE DETAILS

The façade of the Shilda Winery is defined by a series of rhythmic, curved steel beams that mimic the precise spacing of the vineyard rows above. Large, high-performance glass panels fill the gaps between the beams, oriented primarily toward the north to bring in soft, indirect light without heating up the space. By using the exposed earth and soil as a natural boundary, the façade blends into the ground, focusing on natural temperature control to keep the wine at its best, while the dark metal and glass give it a sharp, modern edge.

DIAGRAM

The complex consists of two levels: ground level is for people, with views and natural light and lower for wine with optimized cooling and light for wine storing.

00 Level – Restaurant, welcome centre and conference hall

B1 Level – Wine cellar and degustation centre.

Shilda has high annual solar gain and very dry environment, to address this, the thermal mass of the soil is used to optimize the cooling of the building and the most of the glazed cladding is facing towards the north to avoid direct solar gain.

Structure follows the 2.5m spacing of vineyards and is expressed internally and externally. The structure consists of steel beams with concrete support at the base.

The spacing and the depth of the steel beams are accommodating the soil and the build-up for the vineyard. This structural principle emphasizes the idea of embedding the building within the landscape of vineyards.

Location: Shilda, Kakheti, Georgia
Functions:

– Wine tasting
– Conference Centre
– Restaurant
– Bar
– Wine cellar

Area: 3,000m2

The landscape is elevated in order to accommodate 3 main function thus forming 3 hills.

The 3 main functions are:
Wine tasting, wine Storing and wine knowledge sharing.

The complex is about celebrating the wine in its every aspect, from harvesting to consuming. The complex is in Shilda, Georgia, which has traces of wine making spanning over 8,000 years.

The curves of the hills are rationalized into a simple curves with optimal radii for walking on top and making it efficient for snow loads.

Shilda is located in the north part of the wine making region of Georgia with close proximity and views towards the Caucasus mountains.

The building is facing towards the Caucasus maintains and has a clear view towards Tebulusmta through the rows of vineyards.
