ARCHITECTURE

The renovation of the Atskuri Winery breathes new life and transforming an abandoned industrial site. The primary architectural strategy centers on the preservation of the original stonework. To transition the building from a dark, utilitarian past to a luminous modern future, the traditional rooftops were dramatically elevated from the stone base. This provided once-shadowed interiors with soft, natural sunlight and framed views of the surrounding peaks. The new roof structure, characterized by its elegant, sweeping curves, mimics the landscape, while the use of lightweight timber and glass provides a sophisticated, airy contrast to the rugged, local stone below.

EXISTING BUILDING

The existing structure of the Atskuri Winery served as a story of Georgia’s industrial past. Defined by massive, hand-laid stone walls and deep-set arched openings, the building exemplifies a functionalist yet monumental approach.

INTERIOR DETAILS

The interior of the Atskuri Winery is a beautiful mix of old and new. The design keeps the rough, original stone walls but adds warm wood and smooth floors to make the space feel cozy and modern. New wooden ceiling is lifted up to let in soft sunlight and show off the mountain views through thin windows.

3D MODEL

This axonometric 3D model reveals the structural layers of the Atskuri Winery, highlighting the contrast between the heavy, existing stone base and the lightweight modern intervention. The diagram shows preservation strategy where the old Soviet-era stonework and the new contemporary elements coexist without, giving the abandoned building a clear, functional, and airy new life.
